Loko Umeki Fish Pond

The Loko Kuapa and the Loko Umeki are the two types of shoreline fishponds. The Loko umeki were tidal ponds and were usually constructed by building low walls that were submerged during high tides. The walls are made from coral and mud. The Loko umeki did not require a makaha they only needed or fishing lanes (auwais). A platform was built on each auwai so that the fisherman could sit on it when they were harvesting the fish. As the tides go out it leaves several ponds which leave the fish traped. Only men could work in this fishpond. The Men would gather the fish in the several ponds that were left when the tides were low.
